Why do they have to be so big?

Surely wind turbines of this size are far better suited to offshore use. These things are gigantic! I am lead to believe that larger turbines are more efficient, but any assessment of efficiency must be holistic and should take into account more than just the electrical generation efficiency. They are more expensive to build, more expensive to install, and more disruptive to the local environment and tourism.
I really don’t see the environmental or societal benefits to installing such huge turbines in this location. Conversely, I clearly; clearly see the financial benefits to the landowner. But the financial benefits to an already fabulously wealthy land owner should surely not be the reason to build a wind factory in the middle of a thriving rural community.
